Parents visit pre-school booths to learn about early childhood programs.
The Annual Pre-School Open House—co-sponsored by the Neighborhood Associations and Civic Life and the Schools Committees—is a community service to families with young children and an effort to ameliorate the achievement gap by encouraging kindergarten readiness. Directors from over 20 local preschools, day-care centers and early childhood education programs attend the open house to answer questions about their schools. Families can learn about the many options and types of programs available here and in surrounding towns. The evening also includes a representative from the South Orange-Maplewood School District to talk to families about the importance of kindergarten readiness and the early elementary years in the SOMSD.
