2007-- Another Productive Year for the Coalition |
What a year! We won awards; hosted hundreds of people at a forum on integration in September; raised funds with wonderful celebrations; had a Two Towns One Book Children's Read; completed a Parent Advocacy handbook and a 5 Step Plan for Superior Schools; worked on a strategic plan for the organization-- and much, much more.
We thank all of our supporters for all you did in 2007, and we wish you a safe and healthy 2008.

Holiday Party Brings Warmth to an Ice Storm
|

Coalition Trustees and Volunteers gathered to enjoy a warm buffet dinner at Cryan's Restaurant in South Orange on Thursday evening, December 13. Cryan's, a local watering hole and pub, is the place Columbia High School graduates (at least the ones over 21) meet every year the night before Thanksgiving to catch up on friendships.
This year, although some of us had doubts that our Coa lition Party would actually take place because of an ice storm, and even though the the weather ourside continued frightful, the company inside was-- as usual-- completely delightful, and a good time was had by all!

Highlighting CHS: Facts, Fears, or Folklore?
|
Nearly Forty adults and young people joined members of the Schools Committee of the Coalition at a special educational program about Columbia High School that took place in the library of Maplewood Middle School on November 28, 2007. Co-sponsored by the Home and School Associations of both Maplewood Middle School and South Orange Middle School, the program was created by CHS senior, Samiel Cameron. Last spring, she received an award for this program from the Princeton Prize on Race Relations. With support from special guest Dr. Lovie Lilly, CHS principal, and facilitation by Schools Committee Co-Chair Meredith Sue Willis, Samiel led the participants in an exercise in which they discussed and categorized statements about our high school as Fact, Fear, or Folklore.
Everyone learned something, and many of the middle school parents came away looking forward to sending their children to our terrific high school.

Sixth Pre-School Open House Is Success
|
The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race presented its sixth annual Pre-school Open House on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the New Cafeteria at Columbia High School. This program, made possible by the work of volunteers from the Neighborhood and Civic Life Committee and the Schools Committee, was the most successful yet. More than 150 people attended, and 24 pre-schools were represented. The evening included a lively, well-received presentation about kindergarten readiness given by Seth Boyden principal Mr. Mark Quiles.
The Coalition is happy to present programs like this as a service to the community, and especially as a means of increasing awareness of what preparation children need to be enthusiastic, successful learners.

Coalition Continues to Present Five Steps
for Superior Schools to the Communitye |
The Schools Committee of the South Orange/ Maplewood Community Coalition on Race, after much discussion, has developed a list of points aimed at making our school district more equitable and even more excellent. The Committee sent its ideas on to the Trustees of the Coalition, who worked diligently over the summer to agree on a platform for superior schools. In September and October the five steps were presented to the town governing bodies, South Orange-Maplewood Education Association (SOMEA), Board of Education, and Superintendent Osborne. On November 13, Coalition Vice Chairs Sue Willis and Natalie Thigpen presented them to the PTA/HSA Presidents' Council, and on November 20, Vice Chair Linda Gadsby and Trustee Jim Nathenson made a presentation to the Maplewood Township Committee. As an organization, the Coalition does not take positions on curriculum, but we do believe that these steps will create an atmosphere that is conducive to an increasingly excellent school system. To see the full platform and its statement, look on our website at Five Steps.

Chair's Column:
Another Busy Year
|
|

Let me begin by thanking you for your support throughout 2007. It has been a productive but also challenging year. We had a terrific forum on integration in September; a stunningly successful fund-raiser in November; our Pre-School Open House was the most successful yet; we offered three Parent Advocacy Workshops for families as well as completing our Parent Advocacy Handbook. We won a prize for our ongoing program in the schools, Aim High!, and a CHS student to whom we have given a lot of support was a finalist in the Princeton Prize for Race Relations. We gave many community tours, including ones to realtors and also to new hires in the school district as well as to this year's Leadership New Jersey class. We continue with our pro-integrative second mortgage loans (PRISM); we initiated an e-newsletter; and we helped to mediate behind the scenes in several important crises as well as taking public stands on important issues related to integration and inclusion.
In 2008 we look forward to community wide discussions on our Five Steps for Superior Schools, continuing partnerships with other organizations, and providing an incredible array of programs-- including our upcoming January 21st Martin Luther King, Jr. program. We will continue to work on our Strategic Plan and, hopefully, move forward with a community that is ever-changing.
It has been my honor to serve as Chair of the Coalition. Thank you to each Trustee, our staff, and volunteers for a job well done. We are, indeed, a community rich with talent and dedicated individuals. Let us all rededicate ourselves to building and sustaining an inclusive, integrated community of choice for all.
Happy holidays and best wishes for a safe, healthy, and fruitful new year. I look forward to continuing our work together.
Carol Barry-Austin
