Then join our efforts throughout the MLK weekend, January 14-16, 2012!
The recent dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC serves as a solid reminder of the ‘power of one’ and the positive impact that we can make individually and collectively. The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is spearheading efforts to increase that positive impact locally. Here’s how you and your organization can participate:
- To get the word out about your mission and recruit new volunteers, you are invited to set up an informational table at our Volunteer Service Fair immediately following the Coalition’s 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance, Monday, January 16, 2012. This event regularly draws over 400 residents—a great way to introduce people to your cause!
- To serve as a donation drop off site at any point throughout the MLK weekend, send us the location, the time period, the donation need (books, canned goods, coats, etc.), and the intended recipients of the donation (local homeless shelter, food pantry etc.). We will advertise your donation effort on our flyers and our website.
- To sponsor a volunteer project that weekend (blood drive, clean up, knitting circle, letter writing to troops, meal preparation for the homeless, etc.), send us a description of the project and we’ll include it in all our MLK weekend promotions.
- To teach people of any age about the legacy of Dr. King, let us know if you can host a discussion group for adults on a Dr. King speech, a story or craft time for children, or any other learning events. We’ll help spread the word!
To register your table for the Volunteer Fair or to list your MLK project with us, fill out the attached form and return it to us by email, FAX or mail as soon as possible and no later than Tuesday, January 3, 2012. If you need additional information call Nancy Gagnier or Audrey Rowe at 973-761-6116.
This year’s MLK Observance will be at 3:00 pm at Prospect Church on the corner of Tuscan Rd. and Prospect St. in Maplewood. The Volunteer Service Fair for local organizations will follow at 4:00 pm.
