Update: The first workshop was wonderful! The group of singers learned two pieces led by Cantor Perry Fine of Congregation Beth El–one in Hebrew and the other in Yiddish. Cantor Fine taught the singers about the history and meaning of the pieces as he got them to produce a beautiful sound. Tina Marshall, music minister at First Baptist Church of South Orange then led the group in two gospel songs. She explained the tradition of gospel singing and had the group begin with simple melodies that build and add harmonies as they repeat.
Week 2 with Peri Smilow and Amondhylla Best included contemporary Jewish music with beautiful harmonies and poetic lyrics as well as South African sounds and rythyms.
